Flashlight of the Week

The Go! Team goes from 0 to 60 in a blink and they never pull off the redline. Their new video for "T.O.R.N.A.D.O." looks and feels like the schoolyard throwdown you've dream about, wherein you face your childhood nemesis head to head and reign victorious.

SXSW Spotlight: Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog perform at SXSW in 2006Defined by some as a psychedelic rock group, Dr. Dog has more of an endearing quirky aesthetic rather than the floating mushroom trip connotations that go along with "psychedelic." In fact after further listening, there is a definitive 60's sensibility to their songs reminiscent of The Beach Boys and The Beatles. Last Fm should also move Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Fleet Foxes farther up on the Dr. Dog's similar artist list, especially judging by the songs now featured on their Myspace.

With dreamy cyclical flute vamps, echoing voice parts, distinct percussive hits, Dr. Dog pushes the pop rock definition a little bit further and always brings an element of "What was that? That sounded cool" to every song. The band always includes something unpredictable to their pieces, which makes for an interesting and large musical catalog through the bands nearly 10 year career.

With their latest album ready to drop on April 4th and performances at SXSW and Bonnaroo this year, Dr. Dog is picking up momentum. By honoring the psychedelic retro rock sound with an indie-american folk twist, these dogs will have their day.
