Flashlight of the Week

The Go! Team goes from 0 to 60 in a blink and they never pull off the redline. Their new video for "T.O.R.N.A.D.O." looks and feels like the schoolyard throwdown you've dream about, wherein you face your childhood nemesis head to head and reign victorious.

SXSW Spotlight: Kings Go Forth

I don't know about you, but when I think of Milwaukee, I think of funk music... No, That's not true, but then I heard Kings Go Forth after searching around the SXSW Saturday night line-up. Seems Wisconsin has got a whole lot more soul than I thought.

The band's 10 man line-up is a powerhouse of R&B and Rock, which stems from years of each individual's experience in music. Their sound is unmistakably retro-soul, with horn pops,  conga rolls,  keyboards, and three-part harmonies. Within three years of forming Kings Go Forth, the band garnered attention around Milwaukee from live shows and radio play. Their series of 45 rpm singles sold out quickly after the first press and are now going for upwards of $200 a piece on the web auctions.

This is an exciting band who's passion withstood through logistical difficulties, considering 10 members led separate lives with families and jobs. Though touring was initially difficult, they networked their infectious sound through the internet and earned spots on several international compilation discs. It was also common for the geographically dispersed band to rehearse by sending practice recordings over the web.

By churning out attention grabbings songs that cross genres from ska to R&B, they earned opening slots along side established soul revivalists like Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Kings Go Forth endured through any difficulties with their dedication to their work and signed to Luaka Bop records in 2009, with their debut album arriving in April 2010.
