Nicki Minaj,
Pink Friday
Nicki Minaj is nothing to be scared of after all. Her debut album Pink Friday indulges into pop princess territory just as much as schitzo femcee fatale and does it damn well.
The soft first single, "Your Love," was followed by the primal "Roman's Revenge" character, then ballads like "Right Thru Me" and "Save Me."
Still, her core is a bad-ass diva from New York and she makes sure everyone knows it. Track one, following hip-hop protocol with thick synths and drum machines, "I'm The Best" lists her conquests. Pink Friday laces instant hooks into dirty dance hall joints, ("Blow Yo Mind" and "Muny,") and club hits ("Super Bass" and "Check It out").
Does her solo album live up to all the featuring spots on hit singles? Depends on which Nicki you expected? Because not every song is a rabbid spit like on "Monster." But there are reminders why Nicki Minaj is a breakout female rapper. She knows how to work a hip-hop hit. Plenty of big sing-a-long choruses, quick spitting rhymes, and enough personalities to keep up her momentum.
